Freshness & Packaging Guidance for Pomegranate

For pomegranate, the packaging plan should account for rind condition and moisture/weight loss. Results can vary with variety, maturity, pack weight, temperature, humidity, pre-cooling, handling and journey duration.

Post-Harvest Physiological Challenges in Pomegranates

Pomegranates (*Punica granatum* - Bhagwa, Ruby, Ganesh) are highly valued non-climacteric export fruits with high post-harvest storage potential. Key degradation causes include:

  • Husk Browning & Skin Shriveling: Moisture transpiration through the porous rind causes skin wrinkling and dull browning.
  • Aril Desiccation & Weight Loss: Prolonged cold storage causes internal aril drying and seed aril softening.
  • Fungal Fruit Rot (*Botrytis* & *Penicillium*): Micro-cracks in the crown/calyx allowing rot pathogens to develop under humid conditions.

Recommended Cold-Chain & Storage Protocol

Parameter Recommended Export Value VAMSA Technical Impact
Storage & Transit Temp 5.0°C to 7.0°C (41°F – 45°F) Prevents chilling injury while extending storage to 90–120 days
Relative Humidity (RH) 90% – 95% Maintains husk turgidity and glossy red skin appearance
Target $O_2 / CO_2$ Balance 5% $O_2$ / 5% – 8% $CO_2$ Suppresses respiration rate & husk discoloration
Liner Specification VAMSA Fresh Keeper Grade FK-STD (26 × 40 in, 35µm) Active Silver Nano ethylene conversion + RH balancing
Max Export Transit Duration 90 – 120 Days Enables long-term cold storage and global sea freight exports

Packhouse Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)

  1. Sorting & Calyx Cleaning: Grade fruit by size/color and remove field dust from the crown calyx.
  2. Pre-Cooling: Rapidly cool fruit pulp down to 6.0°C in cold storage rooms before packaging.
  3. Liner Insertion: Place 26×40 in Fresh Keeper liner in 3.5kg, 4kg, or 20kg export crates with cushion pads.
  4. Air Expulsion & Sealing: Gently press out headspace air, twist liner top 3 times, and fold flaps closed.
  5. Long-Term Cold Storage: Transfer pallets into 6.0°C storage chambers for transit dispatch.
